Excuse Me, Ms. Big Shot

I'm going to take a moment and vent about something that really, really erks me.

I have a very small audience of followers. Even though I have been blogging for over a year now, I still have sat around those couple of followers. I really haven't put as much time and effort into this blog as I would have liked, but that's how life is sometimes. There's always this "debate" where some people will say they don't care about how many followers they have and then people will call them out and say, "Yeah right, you totally care because the number of followers determines how popular you are." Personally, I think that everyone cares how many followers they have, except that some care more than others.

I do care how many followers I have, but it's because I want people to be interested in what I am writing about. It's more important that I have page views rather than followers because than I know people are at least interested in reading what I wrote about.

Recently, I've felt "shunned" from "big" bloggers because I don't have enough followers. It's almost like these big blogs don't want to waste their time on "little" blogs because they don't have enough followers. Excuse me? I'm pretty sure YOU once had less than 100 followers and YOU wanted people to read what you were writing. Now since you have over 200 followers, you think you have the right to just ignore the small blogs? The reason I got so fired up about this was because one of the blogs that I recently started reading made a post about a blog award. One of the blogs she nominated commented on the post and basically said "Thanks for nominating me, but I don't follow blogs that have less than 200 followers and I'm too busy." ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Just because a blog doesn't have over 200 followers doesn't mean that it's not good reading content. The whole point of being in the "blog" universe is to make friends and discovery new interests and ideas. Not to mention to appreciate the work that someone else has put into a post, their blog design, or their shop where their selling items in. It's not a popularity contest, so why are you making it into one?

End rant. Sorry I kind of lost it there. Does anyone else feel my frustration?

  1. That's absurd. I understand if people are too busy to read every blog they follow every day (we all have lives outside our blogs), but to say they won't even read/follow based on a number is ridiculous. Ughh. You have every right to be frustrated on this one.

    1. I know. I agree that sometimes, you don't have time to read every blog post, but why would you only chose to read the blogs that have a large number of followers? I'm looking for good content, not a large follower base.

  2. I cannot believe that someone would say that.. That's crazy! That's so bratty! I have seen people acting like that, and I just don't get it. The blogging community is supposed to be a friendly community.. not a place to bully and be rude. Why join it in the first place then? It is refreshing to know though, that most bloggers aren't like that. I have bloggy friends that have over 2000 followers and are still as sweet as can be! I think it's really the true personality of someone that starts to show when they use the number of followers they have to act a certain way... I completely understand your rant and went on a mini one myself.. oops :p I do hope besides this, your day is going well! Have a great weekend dear :)

  3. Aww Courtney! I am sorry about how upsetting all of that was! I might be a little blog but I have a lot of love to give this community just like you and it counts for a lot! :) We are small but proud and have a lot of worthwhile content to share with the world!

    Sending my love your way!

    This Lovely Little Day

  4. Woa what nerve! I'd totally drop following that blog immediately. Nowadays, I don't have time even for my own blog let alone reading other's (my google reader busting from the seams) but that has nothing to do with following base.

Followers are good to remind yourself you are not talking to yourself and someone out there is there to read but other than that community bonding thing it is not that important.

    1. Exactly. I don't want to waste my time reading her stuff when she can't read anyone else's. and I agree, you want to feel like someone cares about what you are writing. Otherwise you may go a little crazy talking to yourself! :p
